I feel you on the putting the cart before the horse idea! There are so many cool tech toys out there (and oh so little time to explore them fully) that I have been there where it's too much for me AND the kids in the middle of a project! Taking your time is sure an important thing with technology.

This is so well done Melanie! I can tell you learned a lot from your research. I actually got some ideas from your post that I can apply this fall when I try to get my kiddos blogging. You can bet I'll be calling on you for some advice. Great post!

Great description! We may be able to share resources for your project. I'm trying a way to get feedback from non-classroom members and a ton of my research came up with the use of blogs. There is an article I posted in our de.licio.us page that actually talks about the engagement and motivation of students when using blogs in collaboration with college students. Hope it helps!

"Today’s fifth grader has never known life without technology, they have never heard of a eight track or even a vinyl record." This sure makes me feel old!
"This technology engages students in a whole new way. Even reluctant writers and communicators become excited and enthusiastic for blogging. In fact in 2007, a BlogMeister survey found that 90% of students surveyed agreed or strongly agreed that they enjoyed writing more when they wrote on their blogs. (Warlick, The BlogMeister)" I completely relate to this statement. I am in awe of how kid beg to blog! This will be a great project.

Melanie,
I think you are asking excellent questions! I think that the twist you have on this project is really exciting. I'm tempted to take your survey with my kids and send you the results! Your kids will be receiving continuous feedback on their writing. Grading on the Six Traits is a great idea. Which rubric do you use?

This is really helpful information for all of us. Thanks! What research have you found for your tech quest so far? Have you been able to evaluate any of the information you've found yet?

"If you bake an apple pie in the oven for longer- It won't make it any better"... that is a great metaphor for longer days/school years not fixing the problem! Cool thanks for that!
